Rabbi Silver was the spiritual leader of Temple Menorah, in Redondo Beach, California, from 1987-2017. He now continues to serve as Rabbi Emeritus to Temple Menorah.
Rabbi Silver was born in Boston and raised in Anaheim, California where his family belonged to Temple Beth Emet, then under the spiritual leadership of the late Rabbi Aaron J. Tofield and Cantor Phillip Modell. He graduated from UCLA in 1974 with a BA in Ancient Near Eastern History and is a credentialed teacher.
Rabbi Silver received his Masters in Hebrew Letters in 1982 at the Los Angeles campus of HUC-JIR and was ordained Rabbi by the Hebrew Union College -Jewish Institute of Religion, Cincinnati, Ohio in 1984. Following ordination Steven became the assistant rabbi and a year later associate rabbi of Congregation EmanuEl in Houston, Texas. In Houston, Rabbi Silver served on the University of Texas medical ethics panel and for many years served in the same capacity at Little Company of Mary Hospital in Torrance. He is a member of the Los Angeles Board of Rabbis and the Central Conference of American Rabbis.
In 2009 he was awarded the title Doctor of Divinity (honorus causa) by HUC-JIR in recognition of his devoted service to the Jewish people.
